Shirley L. (Thomas) Frantum

Shirley L. (Thomas) Frantum, age 79, of Cortland, IL, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, IL. She fought a gallant fight for two days until succumbing to injuries following an auto accident. Shirley was born on August 20, 1929 in Waterman, IL, the oldest of the five daughters of Gerald and Florence (Meyer) Thomas.

Shirley attended Sycamore United Methodist Church, in Sycamore, IL and was a former member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Hinckley, IL. She was a Realtor, for over 22 years, most recently, working with her daughter, Deanna. Mrs. Frantum was a member of the National Association of Realtors, the DeKalb Association of Realtors, the DeKalb County Farm Bureau and the Green Valley Saddle Club. Shirley was actively involved with several area Singles Clubs until she met the love of her life, Orville "Big O" Bonnell. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and aunt who will be deeply missed by both family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Deanna (Scott) Merchant of Sycamore, IL, and their children, Ryan and Megan Merchant; her daughter, Donnas' sons, Ronald and Richard Thurow; her sisters, Carolyn (Carl) Gaddie of Aurora, IL, Beverly (Wilfred) Danekas of Hinckley, IL, Patricia Thomas of Aurora, IL and Nancy (Bill) Kuppler of Hinckley, IL; as well as, many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gerald and Florence Thomas; her daughter, Donna Nates Thurow; her first husband, and the father of her daughters, Richard G. Nates; her second husband, Carl Frantum; and her dear friend of many years, Orville "Big O" Bonnell.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, April 3, 2009 at the Sycamore United Methodist Church, 160 Johnson Avenue in Sycamore, IL with Reverend Harlene Harden officiating. Interment will take place in the Evergreen Cemetery in Sublette, IL. Memorials for Shirley may be directed to her family.

Friends may visit from 3:00 until 9:00 P.M. on Thursday, April 2, 2009 at the Nash-Nelson Funeral Home, 1001 W. Garfield St. in Waterman, IL.
