The DeKalb County Poor Farm History
|
In 1853 the Board of Supervisors appointed W. C. Tappan
and Jesse Tindall a committee to contract for a tract of land for a
poor farm, the expense of keeping the poor becoming quite burdensome
to the county. A loan of $3,000 was called for with which to
purchase it. In September, the farm of A. H. Cartwright, between
Sycamore and DeKalb, was purchased for the purpose. Suitable
buildings were erected and for a number of years met the wants of
those for whom it was intended. At the
November term of the Board of Supervisors, in 1870, Moses Dean, W. L.
Simmons, C. W. Broughton, J. F. Glidden and Curtis Smith were
appointed a committee for the purpose of taking into consideration the
purchase of a new farm for the poor and the erection of more suitable
buildings. The committee at the January 1871 term reported
against a change of location, but urged the erection of new buildings,
according to certain plans and specifications filed with their report.
The report of the committee was adopted and recommendations concurred
in. Moses Dean and J. F. Glidden were appointed a committee to
superintend the erection of new buildings. An appropriation of
$9,500 was made for the purpose. At the September 1871 term, the
committee reported the cost of improvements would amount to about
$14,000. An additional appropriation of $1,500 was made.
The buildings were completed before winter. In that year there
were 33 inmates in the poor house.
For the year 1884 the cost of operating the farm and
caring for the poor was $2,263.38. The average appropriation
annually is $1,800. For the year 1884 it was reported there were
26 inmates in the house; three deaths and one birth had occurred.
The cost of each inmate for the year, exclusive of farm products used,
was $1.59 per week. The institution was well and economically
managed, all parties being satisfied with it.

1880 Poor Farm Census
|
The Joiner History Room has a copy of the special
census taken in 1880 of all poor farm residents. Contact us for
further information. Lookups are easier if you know the township
in which the person lived prior to going to the Poor Farm. |
Poor Farm Deaths and Cemetery List
|
This list is a compilation of three sets of records
pertaining to deaths occurring at the poor farm and the burials in the
poor farm cemetery. Not all individuals who died at the poor
farm were buried in the farm's cemetery. As noted, sometimes
family members or friends claimed the body for burial elsewhere.
Not all individuals who are buried in the cemetery died at the poor
farm. Some were buried at the expense of the county and this is
where they were laid to rest. Prior to the establishment of the
poor farm, indigent people or those with no family were cared for in
private homes with the county paying the cost of care. Upon
death, the county paid for their burials. As a result, some
dates in the following list may predate the establishment of the poor
farm. The Joiner History Room does not have any poor farm
records that can be copied. You should contact the DeKalb County
Clerk's office to see if there is a death certificate on record.
This is not a complete listing of all burials in the
cemetery. |
