HISTORY OF ROSS GROVE CEMETERY

Ross Grove Cemetery is located at the NW corner of the NE quarter of Section 11, to the west of
Sleepy Hollow road. Only a few tombstones remained in 1977 when this reading was made.

Early history of the area indicates a settlement with a church, school and post office. A study of land
records indicates Joseph Ross was the largest land holder in Section 11. The 40 acres NW NE was
purchased June 9, 1845 by Joseph Ross. Other families purchasing land before 1850 included:
Charles T. Ross, James Adsit, George D. Moulton, Bryant C. Abbott, David 0. Quint and Thomas
Corydon. The families of Jonathan Cory, Thomas Harper, William Harper, William Ross and Harrison
Spears also appear in the census records in this area. It would appear that there may be more burials
in this cemetery and that the graves are no longer marked. It is possible that many were buried on their
farm property, as many interments were made previous to the establishment of cemeteries. A search in
nearby cemeteries may locate members of these early families.
