Also Known as Hick Mills Cemetery

LOCATED:  About 4 miles West of Kirkland on Route 72 and Irene Road, one mile South on Irene Road,
Section 28, Franklin Township, DeKalb County, Ill.

 ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

           One (1) acre on South West 1/4 Quarter North East 1/4 Quarter intended as a public cemetery,
January 24, 1862 $100.00 from Daniel Chronkhite and to Phild D. Cronkhite his wife to Hick Mill Cemetery
Company.

Lots numbered 97 thru 104 were set apart forever as Potters Field for burial of strangers and indigents.

            March 13, 1946 petition of Hick Mills Cemetery for aid in improving their cemetery and stating there
were several cemeteries in the county in similar condition. Petition by Mr. McKenzie, Chairman of Judiciary
Committee.

            1945 Supervisor’s minutes contain petition signed by Geo. Yeager, John Upstone, C. E. Duval, Pearl
Gibson, A. Whamot to obtain money for fencing and cleaning grounds. Petition states cemetery was purchased
from Chronkhite Estate circa 1860 and that members of the Kirk Family are buried there, Kirkland was named
for this family
.

            There are 12 Negroes buried In the Potters Field along the East fence line, they were killed In a railroad
accident West of Kirkland years ago and each has a square stone marker, flush to ground, and no names, one
was the cook at the Old Hotel. There are veterans buried here and an Indian warrior, but the place of burial is not
known.

            The lots start in the Northwest corner and run from North to South, then South to North from back
to back of the Cemetery.
